Famagusta District: First in the illegal trapping of birds

Poaching complaints, Poaching

The Committee against Bird Slaughter (CABS) during its 12th spring bird protection tour in Cyprus, in which nine volunteers from four European countries participated, resulted in the prosecution of five poachers and the collection of 286 sparrows together with the competent authorities.

According to a CABS announcement, this is the lowest number of incidents detected in the spring and is a positive message that at least bird trapping during the spring migration season is slowly disappearing, as the number of traps found has dropped dramatically.

The director of the organization, Alexander Heyd, states that the fines imposed for illegal trapping during the closed hunting season are an important deterrent, in contrast to those imposed in the fall (during the open season). One poacher was fined € 8.200 for trapping with a spear, while another received a fine of € 20.200 after he was found in possession of spears and wire rods.

Almost all the trapping incidents (17 in total), he says, were recorded in the Famagusta area, which remains the worst illegal trapping area.

The area of Famagusta is also mentioned as the area where other illegalities were observed as well as heinous acts against wildlife.
