Authorities in Sudan have released the head of al Jazeera's office in Khartoum, two days after he was arrested during a raid on his home. El Mousalmi El Kambasi was released today, while the army that has seized power in Sudan did not announce the reasons for his arrest.
On Sunday, shortly after the arrest of El Kambasi, a Sudanese citizen, al Jazeera announced that it "considers the Sudanese authorities responsible for the safety of all its employees."
Also Monday, the Qatari-based television network complained that the journalist remained in custody, despite the fact that "the prosecution has requested his release".
After the October 25 coup, al Jazzera covered and often broadcast live anti-junta demonstrations. The leader of the coup, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has given only two interviews, one of which was broadcast on television.
After the coup, many official journalists were replaced and barred from returning to their posts. The transmitters of private radio stations have also been confiscated. Prior to the coup, Sudan was ranked 159th out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) global ranking of press freedom.
