Human remains, believed to belong to a 70-year-old man, were found in the stomach of a tiger shark caught off the coast of St Le, west of the French island of La Reunion, in the Indian Ocean.

The male shark, 3,5 meters long, was caught on Thursday night and today was examined by scientists from the Shark Safety Center (CSR). According to a source, two arms and a watch chain were found in his stomach.

Relatives of the 70-year-old, who went missing on December 12 while kayaking in the Salin Lagoon, have identified the chain.

At this stage it is not possible to determine if the unfortunate man drowned or if he was killed by a shark.

A similar macabre discovery was made on November 6, when a hand and forearm were found in the stomach of a tiger shark caught off the coast of Saint-Gilles. A subsequent search revealed the remains of a Scottish tourist who mysteriously disappeared while swimming in the Hermitage Lagoon.

Since the beginning of the year, two people - a fisherman and a surfer - have been killed by shark attacks in La Reunion.
