An Italian nurse was sentenced on Friday night to life in prison for the murders of four patients in the intensive care unit and anesthesiology department of Piombino Hospital in Tuscany in 2014 and 2015.

According to the Italian news agency Agi, the verdict for the nurse was pronounced after a consultation lasting almost six hours.

Fausta Bonino, who was suspected of more than ten premeditated murders, once again declared her innocence, while her lawyer, after being informed of the details of the verdict, which remain confidential, announced that she intends to appeal.

The Italian authorities then accused Bonino of killing at least ten patients in 2014 and 2015, who were in a serious but not desperate condition, by giving them strong doses of anticoagulant, which caused them to bleed uncontrollably. Shortly after the nurse was arrested, the Minister of Justice had spoken of a new "peak" in the scale of human misery.
