On lack of staff, mainly unskilled, which are faced by several Cypriot companies, confirms the electronic investigation conducted by OEB and which was also sent to the Minister of Labor.

The findings of the investigation that began on October 25 and ended on November 8 were officially published yesterday by the Federation with OEB noting that from the answers given, it becomes clear in terms of the size and severity of the problem of labor shortage.

According to the research findings, with answers from just 320 companies nationwide, the needs for human resources until the end of 2021 amount to 4.160 people, while the needs for human resources until the middle of 2022 amount to 4.497 people. In total, OEB reports, the needs of companies in the short-term (immediate) and medium-term horizon (first half of 2022) amount to 8.657.

The organization also mentions the recording of the needs for unskilled personnel that amounts to a total of 1.261 people by the end of 2021 and an additional 1.315 people in the first half of 2022. At the same time, increased needs for human resources are recorded in the sector Retail trade amounting to 1.109 vacancies by the end of 2021 and an additional 785 vacancies in the first half of 2022.

Based on the findings of the research, A large shortage of staff is also recorded in the food sector (cooks, bankers, etc.) with the need to fill 623 jobs for 2021 which more than double in the first half of 2022 to 1.546 jobs.

According to information from "F", the conclusions of the investigation conducted by OEB have been notified to the Minister of Labor, with a relevant letter, following a meeting held on the issue between the minister and the social partners. In the same letter, according to the same information, OEB informs the minister that, following its own appeal, the federation called on its members to forward their relevant requests for recruitment to the Department of Labor.

Finally, OEB requests that, after the recording of needs and vacancies, the commitment given to speed up the procedures for filling the vacancies from abroad be implemented. However, no final decisions have been taken on the matter, as the relevant investigation requested by the Department of Labor by the Minister of Labor has not yet been completed. In the context of this research, The Department of Labor will record the requests that arrive from companies and will proceed to the categorization of the registered unemployed, in order to fill the vacancies, either by unemployed, or by community, or by personnel from third countries.
