A database with the spatial distribution of terrestrial reptiles and amphibians found in the fauna of Cyprus was created by the Terrestrial Ecosystems Management Laboratory of the Open University of Cyprus and the Herpetological Association of Cyprus who collaborate in an innovative action with the aim of informing and protecting the island's reptile fauna.
According to an announcement by the Open University of Cyprus, through this partnership a digital Atlas of reptiles and amphibians of Cyprus has been created, i.e. a database with the spatial distribution of terrestrial reptiles and amphibians found in the fauna of Cyprus.
At the present stage, the Atlas hosts more than 5.500 occurrence points of 22 terrestrial reptiles and amphibians and the aim is, with the contribution of the world ('citizen science'), the database to be constantly enriched and to be an important tool for the protection of Cypriot biodiversity.
The data for the Atlas has been compiled from a wide range of sources, including scientific and popular literature and books, data from reptile recording programs, existing databases created by volunteers and informed citizens, and more.
