"It is indeed the highest number of cases we have ever had in Cyprus in one day."
Cyprus on Tuesday recorded a record number of coronavirus cases with 941 cases, which is the largest number since the day the pandemic began on the island, while a further increase is expected, according to the member of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SCC), Professor of Microbiology / Molecular Of Virology of the Medical School of the University of Nicosia Dr. Petros Karagiannis.

"It is indeed the highest number of cases we have had so far in Cyprus in one day. "With the pace and the increased number of cases that we had on a daily basis, it was expected that we would exceed 900ari", said Dr. Karagiannis to KYPE.

He said the situation is worrying as each case indicates about ten contacts. "Even if two contacts from each one come out positive, we are talking about numbers that are quite high," he noted.

Asked if the situation would worsen, the Professor said: "I think we can hit a thousand cases."

Teleconference of the Scientific Advisory Committee

The scientific conference of the Scientific Advisory Committee started at 7 pm on Tuesday and was expected to be long due to the volume of issues that the scientists had to discuss.

As we are informed, issues on the table were the measures that will be in force until the end of the month, whether they will be extended or not, the situation in schools, the special arrangements in the churches during Holy Week, the vaccines and the pressure on the health system.

Regarding the special arrangements in the churches during Holy Week, Dr. Karagiannis said that a suggestion will be made to the State, to encourage the faithful to use the exteriors of the churches.

He also added that the recommendation of the TEU to the Government will be the extension of the existing measures against the spread of the coronavirus until May 15.
