A review of the Police Law 2006, which governs the Independent Authority for the Investigation of Allegations and Complaints against the Police, is requested by the Police Force Branch, which belongs to the Independent Union of Civil Servants of Cyprus (KAS-ASDYK).

Protoselidos hosted Lucas Christou, President of the ASDYK Police Force Branch, who explained that the way the Independent Authority operates, every police officer has a criminal investigator on his side, as he characteristically said.

"We consider that the Independent Authority has super powers. An investigation can be initiated only on suspicion. A large number of colleagues are under investigation under a criminal investigator for no reason and without complaint," said Mr. Christou.

He then said that from 2006 to 2019, the Authority recorded 2509 cases that it investigated, and of these, only 1010 were assigned an investigator to investigate. "In the end a small number of them end up in a court proceeding or a disciplinary proceeding.

The low convictions of our members show that there are non-existent complaints from people who take revenge against police officers. The purpose is to cause mental and financial suffering to colleagues. This also affects the prestige of the Police", he said.

"Some have discovered the fat cows or some want to completely tie the hands of the Police. There is an effort to create a climate of fear and pressure in order to have a discount at the time of performing duties. There will be no discount from us", stressed Mr. Christou. "A reckless police will be created. I don't think anyone wants this," he said in closing.
