The Turkish side's statements on the basis of a solution to the Cyprus problem are in complete contradiction with the decisions of the United Nations, while the report of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on a picnic in Varosia shows that Turkey's policy continues to be provocative and against any principle of justice. , stated the Government Spokesman, Kyriakos Kousios, to KYPE.

Asked to comment on the position expressed by the Turkish side, during the joint interview of the Turkish President with the new Turkish leader Ersin Tatar, that now the two-state solution and Erdogan's proposal for a picnic in Varos must be put on the table. During his illegal visit to the occupied territories on the anniversary of the proclamation of the pseudo-states on November 15, Mr. Kousios said that "unfortunately the statements of Turkish officials, and this time of the Turkish President himself and the new Turkish Cypriot leader Er, the basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem, clearly show their intention, which is in complete contradiction with the UN resolutions and the UN Security Council resolutions, as well as with the Joint Statement of 25 November 2019 at the Tripartite Conference in Berlin which was convened by the UN Secretary General ".

He stressed that "our side remains committed to resolving the Cyprus problem through talks on the basis of UN resolutions and Security Council resolutions as well as the convergences to date and the European acquis, EU principles and values", noting that Cyprus is and will continue to be an EU member state.

He added that "our side is determined to continue the dialogue to resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of what I have mentioned."

Mr. Kousios stated that "unfortunately the Turkish provocations, which are manifested not only by the illegal interventions in our EEZ but also by the change of the status of the enclosed city of Famagusta, do not contribute to the creation of a positive atmosphere for the resumption of talks".

He added that "President Erdoγan's latest statements on a picnic in Famagusta allow each of us to evaluate Turkey's policy, which continues to be provocative and against all principles of law and is part of its general destabilizing policy. which applies to Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh, the Greek continental shelf and the Cyprus EEZ ”.

Mr Coussios added: "We also see a Turkish President who, in violation of any diplomatic institution and principle, is attacking European leaders such as the President of France, Emanuel Macron, without respecting either the diplomatic institutions or the Europe".

Asked about the pending acquaintance meeting of the President of the Republic with Mr. Tatar, Mr. Kousios said that it has not been finalized yet when it will take place. He added that "we believe that a meeting of the President of the Republic with the Turkish Cypriot leader can only have positive results. "It will be a first acquaintance and we hope that a climate will be created which will be conducive to their further contacts and negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem," he said.

Asked if there has been a firefight by the UN Secretary General so far for a five-day conference on the Cyprus issue, the Representative answered in the negative.
