The President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis will not betray the decision of the vast majority of citizens and will complete his term, as defined by the Constitution and the mandate of the citizens, according to a statement by the Presidency of the Republic.
Commenting on the issue raised today by the AKEL and DIKO parties, for the resignation of the President of the Republic, responding to the position of the President of DISY for possible self-dissolution of the House of Representatives and the announcement of early parliamentary elections, the Presidency states that "President Anastasiadis with a clear and strong mandate to rule the country for five years."
The effort of the two parties, according to the Presidency of the Republic, "coincides with critical developments in the Cyprus issue, with extreme Turkish challenges, which require the maximum possible unity of citizens and political leadership, at the same time as the health crisis caused by the pandemic of the coronavirus which threatens the country with economic consequences ".
He also states that "this is not the time to put forward party interests and pre-election expediencies", but "the time for the greatest possible internal unity".
"Citizens who recognize the urgency of the moment will judge and condemn similar behaviors," the Presidency of the Republic concludes in its announcement.
