The Plenary Session of the Parliament, with 29 votes in favor and 16 against, voted against the Government's proposal to hold a referendum on the reform of local self-government at the same time as the parliamentary elections.

"The Plenary Session of the House with this Decision declares that it opposes the announcement of a pan-Cypriot referendum regarding the promoted local government reform under the provisions of Article 3 (1) of the 1989 Law on Referendums and therefore rejects the no. 358/2021 proposal of the Council of Ministers, dated 23 March 2021 », as mentioned in the relevant decision adopted by Parliament.

The majority of the Parliamentary parties were in favor of the decision of the Parliament, while DISY and the Cooperation of Democratic Forces were against.
