dallld Dali, DEATH, Cancer

Anxiety, fear, and anger have been exacerbated by the last three deaths in just one week in the Idali area.

With residents reacting and demanding the immediate relocation of asphalt production plants that are adjacent to their homes and are likely to worsen the situation.

"Certainly no one can say that their illness is solely due to the pollutants emitted by the fuel oil, but on the other hand, no one can rule it out again," said Idali Mayor Leontios Kalenos.

Residents are outraged by the decision of the Council of Ministers in October 2019 to relocate the concrete asphalt plants, however they continue to be drowned daily by fuel oil fires.

"If the factory was working now, there would be no way we could stay here without tensions, without wanting to go and be locked in a place, in your home," said Michalis Leontiou, a resident of Nea Ledra in Dali. .

In fact, according to the residents of the area who spoke to OMEGA, one of the factories continues to work without the necessary permits, and they immediately ask for the intervention of the state.

And to provoke all this suffocating atmosphere whenever he works, in a school from the largest in Cyprus, Primary and Kindergarten together, 660 children and also to take public works worth millions of euros, representative of the Quality of Life Improvement Movement, Stelios Herodotou.

In the background behind me is one of the factories that according to the residents of the area pollutes the air they breathe and the atmosphere becomes suffocating.

"The big problem is that the factory is open when we sleep. So there is no chance that he will sleep at night and have open windows and enjoy the traditional wolf of Cyprus ", added Mr. Leontiou.

Inactivity in the movement of factories has provoked the reaction of the President of the Republic himself, who has taken the initiative to solve the timeless problem.

"Apart from the decisions of the Council of Ministers, personal interest in this case is also demonstrated by the PTA itself, which is expected to have meetings on this issue in the coming days in order to find solutions and tools that will lead it. termination of operation and the movement of the units from the specific area ", said the Minister of Agriculture, Costas Kadis.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, the inter-ministerial committee set up on the issue was also referred to the Legal Service in order to find the necessary legal tools for the movement of the insurance units.

"Especially in relation to the one unit that operates without an operating license and there the local authority must implement the relevant legislation," he added.

However, speaking to OMEGA, a representative of an involved factory in the area claims that according to studies conducted by both the state and the private sector, they show that the gas emission indicators are below the European average. While they complain that the local authorities use their request as a lever to renew their license so that they can move from the area, and state that they are in direct cooperation with the Government.
