Dozens of private and commercial vehicles form queues on the old Larnaca-Famagusta road, due to the construction works on the road that are carried out by order of the British Bases, for the installation of curves and overpasses.

According to alphanews.live, drivers and locals are subject to inconvenience and delays since the construction works are carried out during peak hours. They emphasize that this road is the only one that leads to and from the Strovilia roadblock, which is crossed daily by hundreds of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

The indignant citizens remind that the old Larnaca-Famagusta road connects the British Bases of Dhekelia and Agios Nikolaos and the communities of Xylotympos, Dasaki Achna, Avgorou and Vrysoullos and that the area is adjacent to industrial, craft and residential areas. trucks and agricultural machinery.

Speaking to alphanews.live, the Mayor of Xylotympos, Kyriakos Papageorgiou, explained that the Community Council submitted a request to the British Bases three years ago to find ways to reduce the deadly and serious road accidents that occurred on this road. The British Base Police recently conducted a study on the installation of curbs and overpasses, with a commitment to re-evaluate the measures within one year of their implementation.

Mr. Papageorgiou said that the initial design of the British Bases was the temporary ban on the movement of vehicles on the road, until the completion of the works. However, for fear of increasing traffic within the community, traffic lights were chosen to regulate vehicle traffic in the two lanes.

The mayor of Xylotympou pointed out that the construction works were scheduled to start in early March, but the bad weather conditions and the prolonged rain did not allow the works to start on time and so it remains unknown when the road will be returned to normal vehicle traffic.

At the same time, he admitted that he has received many complaints from residents of the community of Xylotympos for causing damage to their private and commercial vehicles from the installation of the curves.

Mr. Papageorgiou also revealed that the local authorities have already submitted a request to the competent services for the extension of the urban zone to the west of the community, based on the agreement between the government and the British Bases for the return of territories to the Republic of Cyprus. If such a thing is implemented, then the old Larnaca-Famagusta road will be a road that will pass through the community and measures must be taken for safe driving.
