European Glass Recycling Program by the Municipality of Paralimni (VIDEO)

The ever-increasing environmental burdens - as a result of various and often varied, unpredictable factors - require the development of environmental sensitivity and the adherence to "green" practices.

The Municipality of Paralimni, recognizing the urgent need for recycling, held on Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Municipal Palace of Paralimni, a workshop entitled: "Benefits of intensive use of glass waste in tourist areas."

The workshop was held in the framework of the European project "Invalor 101 - A network for joint valorization of material flows in tourist areas". During the workshop, selected speakers from Greece and Cyprus presented the main objectives of the project, the participating organizations, the innovative pilot actions planned, the expected results, as well as their importance in the local community.

In the context of the project, the municipality of Paralimni intends to install a temporary pilot unit for the treatment of glass waste, from which -after processed- building materials useful to the municipality will be produced. In the relevant workshop, the basic elements of construction and operation of the mobile pilot unit for the utilization of glass waste were presented, with the method of geopolymerization, information was given on the advantages and disadvantages of this method, while the possibilities of development and use were presented. such units at municipal level. At the same time, the solid glass waste management plan for the municipality of Paralimni was presented, as well as the preliminary elements of the planned study, regarding the public perception of recycling.

The workshop was attended by municipal councilors, members of community councils, officials of the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Tourism, the Health Organization and the Famagusta Health Service, an official of the Office of the Environment Commissioner, as well as representatives of environmental organizations. Also present were General Managers of Hotel Units, owners of Leisure Centers as well as representatives of Recycling companies.

The project "Invalor 101 - A network for joint valorization of material flows in tourist areas" is implemented by the municipalities of Paralimni, Megara and Vlora, from Cyprus, Greece and Albania respectively, the University of Patras (Greece), the Research Center of Frederick University ( Cyprus), the Polytechnic University of Tirana (Albania) and the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). Recycling is expected to contribute to solving a very important problem in the tourist municipalities, that of the accumulation of glass especially during the summer months, with parallel environmental and economic benefits.

The project is co-financed by the European program INTERREG VB BALKAN-MED 2014-2020. The "Balkan-Mediterranean Program 2014-2020" is a European Program for Transnational Cooperation, with the participation of five countries, three EU member states. (Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece) and two countries - candidates for EU membership (Albania and the Republic of Northern Macedonia). The overall goal of the Balkan Med program is to promote integrated territorial development and cooperation to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the eligible area.
