An event of remembrance and honor for our compatriots from Famagusta and from all over Cyprus who perished in the summer of 1974, was organized last week in London by the Association of Famagusta of the United Kingdom under the auspices of the National Cyprus Federation of the United Kingdom.

The President of the Association, Dr. Vassilis Mavrou, in his introductory greeting called on the British Government to work even harder for the reunification of Cyprus and for a "more active and continuous pressure on Turkey". He again called for the return of Famagusta to its legal inhabitants in accordance with relevant international resolutions and on the occasion of Turkey's recent progress report published by the EU earlier this month.

The High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Kingdom, Euripides Evryviadis, then said in his greeting that he hoped that this time the talks in Switzerland would be fruitful, but Turkey denied these hopes.

Mr. Evryviadis agreed with Dr. It is black that Famagusta should have already been given back based on UN Security Council Resolution 550 and that a solution that does not include a Turkish occupation army on the island and guarantees is not possible.

Afterwards, the coordinator of the evening, journalist Markos Papadopoulos, gave the floor to the audience, which asked questions to the High Commissioner. The newly elected Labor MP in Britain, Pampos Charalambous, also spoke shortly afterwards.

An anniversary art program and reception followed.
