Islamic State is responsible for an armed attack in central Paris yesterday that killed a police officer and seriously injured two others, the Amaq news agency reported.

The agency announced the identity of one of the perpetrators, saying that it was the fighter of Abu Yusif the Belgian.

"All the evidence of last night's armed attack on police in Paris indicates that it was a terrorist attack," French President Francois Hollande said earlier, adding that security forces would remain vigilant during the upcoming presidential election.

In a televised address, the French president said that an emergency meeting of the heads of the security, defense and intelligence services would be convened today.

Hollande, who is not a candidate in the election - the first round of which will be held on Sunday - said: "We will be extremely vigilant, especially in relation to the election."

The armed attack that took place late today in central Paris looks like a "terrorist attack", said US President Donald Trump, expressing his "condolences to the people of France".

"This is a really horrible thing that is happening, it seems to be a terrorist attack," the Republican president said when asked during a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at the White House.

"It just never ends," Trump added, stressing that "we must be strong."
