The confrontation is escalating after the alleged chemical attack in the Duma of Syria. Theresa May In telephone conversations with Donald Trump and Emanuel Macron, I agreed that the international community needs to respond to reports of chemical use.

At a stormy Security Council meeting, Russia voted against a draft resolution calling for an investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria's Duma. The US draft resolution received 12 votes in favor, two against Russia and Bolivia, while China abstained. A draft resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes from Russia, China, France, Britain and the United States.

May, who held separate telephone conversations with the two leaders today, agreed that reports of a chemical attack in Syria were "completely reprehensible" and, if confirmed, would provide further evidence of the shocking brutality of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"They agreed that the international community needs to respond to maintain a global ban on the use of chemical weapons," said a spokeswoman for May's office, following telephone calls from the prime minister.

Germany is in the same spirit. Chancellor Merkel said there was no doubt that chemical weapons had been used in Syria.

"I believe that the evidence that chemical weapons were used there is very, very clear. It is particularly sad that after so much international discussion, chemical weapons are still being used in Syria. "We must all condemn this in clear language," said Angela Merkel.
