Italy: Houses for sale from 1 euro in Sicily

Although a vacation due to a pandemic is uncertain for many, one thing remains constant in the world of travel: 1 euro houses in Italy.

The Italian village of Castiglione di Sicilia in Sicily offers houses for the price of one euro. The village is located at the foot of Mount Etna, near Taormina and the beaches of the east coast of Sicily.

In this village there are about 900 abandoned houses which are for sale.

The aim of this initiative is to revive the village which since the beginning of 1900, has shrunk from 14.000 inhabitants to just 3.000.

We have to save a huge architectural heritage, full of history. "Over time, too many people left, leaving behind a pile of old, picturesque houses, many of which date back to the Renaissance," Mayor Antonino Camarda told CNN.

"We have carried out an in-depth study of each property based on maps and cadastral data. Depending on the situation in which the houses will be sold at different prices, starting from 1 euro ". The houses that are in better condition, are sold more expensive, starting from 4.000 - 5.000 euros.

Interested buyers should state the type of house they want and give a detailed plan for its renovation. If selected they will have to complete the renovation within three years. "We are moving in two parallel paths: we are communicating with old owners as well as new buyers," the mayor told CNN. In fact, as he claimed, they have already received many emails from investors and people from all over the world.

The village of Castiglione di Sicilia is said to have been built in 403 BC. from refugees who arrived from the coastal settlement of Naxos, near modern Taormina.
