Denmark is easing restrictions on its borders with other northern European countries and Germany, allowing couples who have been separated by the lockdown to meet again today if they can prove they have had sex for at least six months.

But the Danish police want evidence: messages, personal photos or personal information about their loved ones.

"They may have a photo or a love letter with them.… I understand that these are very personal things, but the final decision to grant entry to a person belongs to the police officer," the Danish police deputy told DR.

Although it is good news for couples separated by borders, it highlights the problems that the legislator and the authorities of the countries that will gradually open their borders will face.

Denmark closes its border to all foreigners on March 14 as part of restrictive measures imposed to deal with the epidemic Covid-19.

Since then, elderly couples have met on both sides of Denmark's border with Germany, drinking coffee together and shaking hands between bars to stay in touch.

Danish MPs have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new rules on social media, saying they are a violation of the right to privacy.

"I have never heard of a country where you have to show personal letters or photos to enter. "Eventually we allowed the couple to meet, but we did not abolish the right to privacy," Christian Hegaard, a Social Democrat MP, said on Twitter.
