Following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, where robots were called to go where humans could not, they have now enlisted in the coronation pandemic, helping doctors and nurses at Italian hospitals to treat an invisible enemy. of radioactivity.

The "Tommy" robot is one of six who have taken a job at the Circolo Hospital in Varese, Lombardy, which is the epicenter of the epidemic Covid-19 in Italy. Tommy does not need to wear a mask or gloves, nor does he have to worry about catching the virus.

"It's like having another nurse, but no problems with a possible infection," said Dr. Francesco Dentali, director of the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, according to Reuters. "You have to explain to the patient the time and function of the robot. The first reaction is not positive, especially from the elderly, but then they are happy ", he added.

Baby-sized robots have small wheels to move from room to room and monitor various indications from medical devices, transferring information to medical staff. This allows doctors who are overwhelmed by work and stress to take care of patients in a more serious condition.

In addition, the robots have touch screens in place of the face so that patients can send messages to doctors if they need something. Most importantly, Tommy (the name of the son of a hospital doctor) and his company allow healthcare staff to limit direct contact with patients, thus reducing the consumption of valuable consumables (masks, gloves, etc.). ) as well as the risk of catching the virus themselves and losing the battle. More than 4.000 members of Italian hospital staff have been infected with the virus and 66 doctors have died.

And of course a robot doesn't get tired, like a doctor or a nurse. It just needs a charge of its batteries and returns to the front line without fear.
