Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, his wife, was found in a pool of blood outside his apartment building in Kiev.

Yaroslav Trakalo, Police Spokesman
"He was at his home in the Dnibrovsky district of Kiev, his wife was in the bathroom, she heard a deafening noise when she went out and saw her husband bleeding"

The 41-year-old distinguished journalist and critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin was receiving threats for his life.

He left his last breath in the ambulance, during his transport to the hospital, after he was shot in the back. Authorities suspect the killing was due to the Russian journalist's professional activities.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has accused Russia of being behind the murder of a Russian journalist.

"I am convinced that the Russian totalitarian machine did not forgive him for his honesty and attitude"

Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement that it had asked Kiev to investigate the journalist's murder. The Russian commission of inquiry has launched a criminal investigation. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also called for a thorough investigation by the Ukrainian authorities.

Arkady Babchenko was one of the best-known war correspondents, who fled Russia after receiving life-threatening criticism of Russian policy in Ukraine and Syria.

Relations between Russia and Ukraine remain strained following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the seizure of parts of eastern Ukraine by pro-Russian forces.
