Colombia's most wanted drug trafficker, Dario Antonio Ushuga, also known as "Otoniel", has been arrested in the northwestern part of the country, the Colombian government announced on Saturday.

"Congratulations to the security forces (…) on the arrest in Nekokli of Dairo of Antonio Usuga, also known as 'Otoniel', the senior leader of the Clan del Golfo," Emilio Archila, an adviser to President Ivan Duque, said on Twitter.

The Clan del Golfo is the most powerful drug trafficking gang in Colombia, the world's largest cocaine exporter.

The arrest of Otoniel is the biggest blow the Colombian government has dealt to organized crime in the country. Otoniel was also advertised by the United States, which offered him a reward of $ 5 million.

The miner was arrested in Nekokli, one of the main strongholds of the Clan del Golfo, near the border with Panama.

Otoniel, 50, led a Clan del Golfo formed by former members of far-right paramilitary groups fighting left-wing guerrillas until the 2010s.

The gang is present in almost 300 municipalities across the country, according to the independent Indepaz institute.
