At least 14 people were killed and 17 injured in a car crash involving a bus and a minibus in the southern part of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Friday morning, security officials said.

The fog and speeding of the two drivers were responsible for the accident, which took place near El-Thor, the capital of South Sinai province, 400 kilometers southeast of Cairo, the same sources clarified.

The bus had started from Cairo and was heading to Sharm el-Sheikh, in the Red Sea, when it collided with the minibus.

All the injured were taken to a hospital in the city of El Thor.

There are many accidents in Egypt, where the maintenance of the road network is not good and the traffic code is not complied with to a large extent.

According to official figures, 7.000 people were killed in road accidents in Egypt in 2020.
