The Omicron variant strain of the new coronavirus is spreading at an "unprecedented rate" and therefore people should take a booster dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 because those who have taken the two doses are vulnerable, said today the British Minister of Health Sajid Javid.

Although the British minister noted that there are no confirmed deaths in England yet, the Omicron variant is probably responsible for about 40% of infections in London and stressed that if the government does not act, the health system could be flooded.

"What we do know about Omicron is that (…) it is spreading at an unprecedented rate, something we have never seen before, the incidence is doubling every two to three days," Javid told Sky News.

"This means that we are facing a tidal wave of infections, that we are once again facing a road race between the vaccine and the virus," he said.
