Written statement by the President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis
The interview of Mustafa Akinci in the newspaper Yeni Duzene is revealing enough, both for the long-term goals of Turkey and, however, for the reasons that led to the collapse of the Conference on Cyprus in Crans Montana.
At the same time, with what Mr. Akinci states about the Berlin agreement, he demonstrates that I have not stopped, since the day after the failure of the Cyprus Conference in 2017, to seek the resumption of talks from the point where they were interrupted in Cran Montana.
At the same time, any narratives that wanted to attribute the failure to Crans Montana and to this day, to our side, are refuted.
I would like to reiterate my determination and political will to assist the Secretary-General's efforts to resume the talks, but not on the basis of the prerequisites demanded by Mr Tatar or Turkey.
A new round of talks on the basis of common ground is possible, as set out in the High Level Agreements, but also in the United Nations resolutions setting out the terms of reference of the Secretary-General.
