The problems that frost and snowfall have caused in the mountain communities are being addressed at their root, said the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities, Costas Hambiaouris, to KYPE.
Mr. Hambiaouris, who was answering questions from KYPE about the situation in the mountainous areas, said that the main problems faced by the mountainous communities are due to the frost and the slippery road. He also noted the fact that some water pipes, tanks and solar water heaters have broken, as a result of which the water supply of some houses has been cut off. In some areas there was a power outage, said Mr. Hambiaouris.
The Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities said that "in coordination, the Electricity Authority, the District Administration, the community authorities, the Office of the Commissioner have given their best and support the residents to overcome in the best possible way the problems that arise" .
In addition, Mr. Hambiaouris referred to the one-time emergency aid that will be paid to the affected communities and which is a "personal decision of the President of the Republic". In this way, President Anastasiadis demonstrates in practice his determination to support mountain communities, he added. Due to the frost and the increase in the price of oil worldwide, he said, the President of the Republic, listening to the concerns of the people, took the initiative and asked the Ministers of Finance and Interior to get a proposal for a one-time emergency aid to the Council of Ministers. which takes place on Wednesday.
The Commissioner for Mountain Communities Development assured that the problems of the mountain communities are "being addressed at their root", adding that as soon as a problem or need arises, there is coordination between the services and the Commissioner. Residents of mountain communities are familiar with these problems because they occur every year due to snowfall and frost, he noted. "Apart from the enchanting images that Troodos gives us, there are also security issues and each of us must be careful and obey the instructions of the Police and the Civil Defense to avoid unpleasant situations," he concluded.
