The Municipal Authority has been mobilized since 3.00 am to deal with the problems and damages caused by at least two tornadoes, the Mayor of Germasogeia, Kyriakos Xydias, told KYPE. According to the Police, a person suffered amputation of the fingers of his right hand and is undergoing surgery in Nicosia.

The damage is huge in houses and properties, said Kyriakos Xydias, referring to at least two tornadoes that hit Germasogeia, from the Apollonia hotel area and further north to the Panioti area.

"Trees and stakes of the EAC fell, nurseries were destroyed, windows were broken and tiles were removed from roofs" he said and noted that "what we experienced was unprecedented".

About 20 roads, according to the Mayor, were closed during the night, due to the fall of trees and stakes, while on Andokidou Street, a crane from a construction site gave way and overturned.

In the morning, Panioti Avenue remains closed and the management of the elementary school has already been informed that the school will remain closed today, he added.

From the first moment, he continued, crews from the Municipality, in collaboration with Civil Defense, the Police, Fire Service and District Administration, are in the area to provide assistance and ensure the safety of citizens.

Mr. Xydias also said that he has contacted the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, requesting that accommodation be found for those families who cannot stay in their homes.

Information given by the Mayor of Germasogeia, about an injury to a person, was confirmed by the Police, according to which, a man suffered amputation of the fingers of his right hand, during the passage of a tornado in the house where he lived.

The injured man, according to police sources, was taken to Nicosia General Hospital to undergo a finger fusion operation.
