"We do not have the ability to relax the measures quickly and easily and then have to deal with a third wave which may be unfolding in Europe at the moment."

The good epidemiological picture of the country has led to optimism, but this did not help to further relax the restrictive measures, as the existing ones are extended until the end of February.

On the front page, Dr. Petros Karagiannis, who referred to the epidemiological picture of Cyprus but also to vaccines.

Initially, Dr. Karagiannis said that the picture at the moment is not the best it could be with the opening of the economy, stressing that it would prefer to be done when we are in lower double-digit cases.

He added: "We do not have the ability to relax the measures quickly and easily and then have to deal with a third wave which is perhaps currently unfolding in Europe.

It is up to us to implement the measures and protocols so that we do not see an outbreak in the next two or three weeks.

If we relax everything at the same time, we will be in the position that Attica is in in Greece at the moment ".

He stressed that the self-protection measures will be with us in the summer, but if things go better, the restrictions on distances will relax a bit.

Regarding the AstraZeneca vaccine, he said that we can not afford to play games.

"This vaccine has been used in the UK for a month now alongside Pfizer and preliminary studies show that both vaccines are protective.

We will not return to normal unless we use other vaccines. "Pfizer and Moderna will not give us so much to cover 70% of the population by summer."

In closing, he referred to the Russian sputnik V vaccine, saying: "It seems that the effectiveness of sputnik V reaches up to 90%, but the company itself is late to apply to Coreper."
