Parliament unanimously condemns Turkish actions in Famagusta

The Plenary Session of the House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution condemning the threatened Turkish actions in Famagusta and for regime change in the besieged city and called on the international community and especially the UN to intensify their efforts towards Turkey on the issue of Amos.

Calls on the UN Security Council to put pressure on Turkey to implement UN resolutions, in particular that of 550/1984, which in paragraph 5 calls for the administration of this region to be transferred to the United Nations and for Turkey to take immediate action to to assist the program of the Commission of Inquiry into Missing Persons in the Famagusta area.

The Parliament reminds Turkey that the resolution of the Famagusta issue is clearly defined through decisions of the international community and its exploitation in any way is unacceptable, illegal and reprehensible and calls for a more active role by the EU in achieving this.

It also calls on its Member States to put pressure on Turkey to comply with the provisions of the EP Resolution of 13 March 2019 on the 2018 Commission Report on Turkey (2018/2150 (INI)) concerning the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus and the transfer of the enclave of Famagusta to the United Nations in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 550.

It also called on the EU to impose sanctions on Turkey if it proceeds with its plans in Famagusta.

The Plenary Session of the Parliament also calls on Turkey to take immediate action to assist the CMP program in Famagusta.

The resolution states that Parliament is approving the resolution, following with particular concern the recent statements by the Turkish side on the settlement of Famagusta and considering that Turkey is completely ignoring the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the European Union (EU). Parliament appreciates the European Parliament's continued interest in the issue of Famagusta, in particular its reference to its resolution of 26 March 2012 on the 2011 Turkey Progress Report, which called on Turkey to transfer control of Famagusta. to the UN, in accordance with Resolution 550/1984, its written declaration of 2 February 2012, as well as previous and subsequent relevant resolutions and recommendations of this House,

Expresses support for the Cypriot Government's proposal for the return of the city of Famagusta to the UN, the return of its legal residents and the parallel opening of the port of Famagusta, under EU supervision, for trade by all legal residents of the city, without violating the sovereignty of the KD and EU laws, noting the proposal for the restoration and maintenance of the Venetian walls and monuments of Famagusta, as well as the proposal for the reconstruction of the city outside the city walls based on a new ecological design,

Notes also the continuous international mobilization of the Municipality of Famagusta and the organized groups of legal residents of the city and the collection, in this context, 30000 signatures of Famagusta residents from the Municipality of Famagusta for resettlement in the city of its legal residents and expresses disappointment for the continuous efforts of the Republic of Cyprus on the issue of Famagusta due to Turkey's persistent refusal to respect the relevant decisions of international and European organizations,

Stresses that Turkish methods make the need for an active and dynamic re-enactment of resolutions 550 and 789 even more urgent internationally, with particular emphasis on the fact that the creation of new illegal acts adversely affects the specifications of the described in the relevant UN resolutions, which will benefit both communities.

The Parliament further reaffirms its previous resolutions on the issue of Famagusta, stressing that any aspirations and unilateral actions of the Turkish side aimed at the illegal settlement of the city of Famagusta are outside the framework of the UN resolutions on Cyprus in particular. Famagusta, constitute blatant violations of international law and are therefore not accepted by the KD.

Condemning any change in the status of the besieged city attempted by Turkey, which results in the violation of legal property rights, calls on Turkey to respect the 1979 High Level Agreement and to implement the UN resolutions on the return of the enclosed city. of Famagusta to its legal residents, in particular Resolutions 550/1984 and 789/1992, as a step of good will and willingness to contribute to the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.

In the discussion that preceded the vote, DISY Parliamentary Representative Nikos Tornaritis said that Famagusta is a symbol of return, adding that Parliament bows and honors those who fight for return and those who unjustly left their souls in exile waiting. He also stressed the importance of the recent statement by the President of the Security Council.

AKEL Parliamentary Representative George Loukaidis said that the resolution sends a clear message. He added that it is important to set the goal of the solution and said that the text of the resolution allows to vote unanimously, while retaining their positions.

DIKO MP Christiana Erotokritou stated that the SA resolutions have weight, no matter how much they are dated and are a shield for the Cypriot people. We are all from Famagusta, he continued, adding that we should all demand the implementation of the resolutions regardless of the process of resolving the Cyprus issue. The actions in Famagusta prove Turkey's bad faith, contrary to those who assess it differently, he added.

The President of EDEK, Marinos Sizopoulos, noted that these issues must be what unite us. He spoke about an attempt to introduce differentiating elements, he wondered why we ask for reaffirmation of the resolutions and not implementation of the resolutions and why we have included the return of Famagusta on the 1st day of the settlement of the Cyprus problem.

The President of the Citizens' Alliance, George Lillikas, stated that he unites his voice and condemns the illegal actions of Turkey, and demanded that the resolution include a demand for EU sanctions against Turkey.

Solidarity MP Michalis Giorgallas remarked that we were late for Famagusta, adding that much needed to be done since July 1974. Famagusta was joined by Turks trying to review the regime, he added, adding that they were doing the same with the Council. , in the Balkans and with us. We did not understand the source of the targeting for this and we did not find countermeasures, he added.

The President of the Ecologists' Movement - Citizens' Cooperation, George Perdikis, after stating that we were too late to express our condemnation, said that the Ecologists' Movement condemns the policy for settlement. He expressed the view that so far the condemnation of the Turkish actions has been lukewarm and there is responsibility for the oligarchy for the attitude taken by some bodies.
