The Cyprus Potato Trade Council is being modernized and evolved, says the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, after yesterday's approval by the Council of Ministers of the Ministry's proposal for the future of the SECP.

According to a statement, "yesterday's decision by the Council of Ministers addresses the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Council and the difficulty in taking decisions to modernize structures and improve its efficiency, due to the inability of potato growers to take over their responsibilities." through their recognized groups ".

Despite the efforts made and the incentives given during the last five years, it has not been possible to create Producer Groups with the operational capacity to take over the activities of the Council, it is added.

It is also stated that "through an extensive and honest dialogue with the PCU itself, the agricultural movement and organized groups of producers, it became clear that, at least at this stage and under the current circumstances, the maintenance, modernization and remodeling of the PCT is favored. , in order to improve its operation and efficiency for the benefit of producers and consumers ".

To this end, the announcement continues, the Council of Ministers decided to instruct a special committee to prepare and submit recommendations to the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, which will concern changes in the institutional framework for restructuring the Board of Directors and the Management of SEC , reconstruction of its internal structures, internal control and cooperation with other trading partners.

"The ultimate goal is to improve the operation and efficiency of the Council for the benefit of all those involved in the product production and marketing chain," it added.

At the same time, it is stated that taking into account the fact that the SECP is a self-financed body and does not receive any state sponsorship, the Council of Ministers adopted the proposal of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment to extend the Council until 31/12/2021.

At the same time, according to the adopted proposal, there will be a review of the conditions that will prevail especially regarding the creation and operation of Producer Groups recognized by the competent authority and their operational capacity to undertake the activities of the SECP, with parallel briefing of the Council of Ministers .

"With this Decision, the Council of Ministers puts an end to the uncertainty that had developed around the future of the CEC and creates the conditions that will allow the restructuring of its structures for the benefit of producers, consumers and our rural economy, until they are created. the conditions that will allow the potato producers to take over their responsibilities ", the announcement concludes.
