Cypriot consumers are now satisfied with the absolutely necessary foodstuffs when shopping, as reported by the General Secretary of the Pancypriot Retail Trade Association, Marios Antoniou. "The main priority of the consumer is to buy the basic necessities, i.e. the absolutely necessary food."

According to Mr. Antoniou, before arriving at the checkout, the consumer carefully studies the product offers and reverently adheres to the list he has made in advance. "He stays in it and does not make additional purchases. Nothing unnecessary goes into the basket." Consumers today are "well read," he adds.

This "good study" has therefore reshaped the contents of the household basket. As he emphasizes, consumers have changed their habits within a year, buying fewer and cheaper goods. In particular, he states that a significant decrease in the market is recorded for beef, due to the large increase in its price in a percentage of the order of 30%. "All categories have been affected by precision, while there is also an increase in private label products in supermarkets," he concludes.
