A large number of absences, from teachers and students in Primary and Secondary schools, has been recorded on the first day of reopening of schools after the Christmas holidays.

According to the first data that the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education of the Ministry of Education have before them, so far the percentage of students who are absent has reached close to 19 to 20%.

The absences of the students are mainly due to people who are positive for the virus, people who are contacts of positive cases but also for other reasons.

Speaking on the show Mesimeri kai Kati, the Director of Secondary Education, Louis Kyprianou, regarding the replacement of teachers, said that there were requests for 183 teachers.

"An effort was made to meet all the requests and the data of the first day of reopening were gathered so that in the following days everything that has not already been dealt with can be dealt with," he noted.

The percentage of students who were absent, according to Mr. Louis, has so far reached close to 19%.

On the other hand, the Director of Primary Education of the Ministry of Education, Marios Stylianidis said that a total of 320 teacher replacements were requested to cover.

"Most of them were covered and in other cases alternatives were given by the school administrations. "60 replacements were not paid in the Primary School and 14 in the Pre-Primary School, something that is expected to happen in the coming days after all the cases are recorded", he said.

Regarding the percentage of students absent, Mr. Stylianidis said that they reached approximately 19-20% in Primary School and 30% in Pre-Primary School.
