A protest action against the opening of the Deryneia roadblock is organized by the Movement of Social Democrats EDEK.
An announcement and relevant brochures that have been sent throughout the province of Famagusta, states:
"The opening of the Deryneia roadblock will have serious economic and political consequences both for the Republic of Cyprus and for the residents of the area of Free Famagusta.
1. Today, the occupied area of Famagusta is visited by about 10 tourists living in the area of Free Famagusta. This results in the loss of about 000 euros per day. Opening the roadblock will definitely double those numbers.
2. Due to the low cost and the absence of taxation in the occupied territories, the unfair competition will be intensified to the detriment of the professionals in the free areas.
3. The increase of the tourist flow will facilitate the gradual development of the beach of the occupied city of Famagusta. Such a development will essentially be the tombstone in a possible return of the closed area to its legal residents.
