On Saturday, May 29, 2016, the works of the First Scientific Conference entitled "The Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Savior" were completed with great success and with great attendance.
The conference was held at the Municipal Theater of Sotiras and was organized by the Culture Committee of the Municipality of Sotiras and the Holy Metropolis of Constantia-Famagusta.
Speakers were Dr. Christodoulos Chatzichristodoulou, Byzantinologist, Dr. Maria Paschali, Art Historian, Dr. Nassa Patapiou, Historian - Researcher at the Center for Scientific Research and George Filotheou, Curator of Antiquities, Head of the Ephorate of Ancient Monuments.
The Curator of Antiquities and Head of the Ephorate of Ancient Monuments of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, Mr. George Filotheou in the context of his presentation referred to the research and studies of the monuments of the Savior of Famagusta and their systematic maintenance and recent events.
The Art Historian, Dr. Maria Maschali in her presentation commented on the issues of identity in the mural decoration of the old church of the Transfiguration but also in the research conducted since 2014 in collaboration with the University of Cyprus and the AG Foundation. Leventis.
The Historian-Researcher at the Center for Scientific Research, Dr. Nassa Patapiou, focused on the tombstone of Kontarina Dakila and her story, which is located on the lintel of the church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in the Savior.
The Byzantine scholar, Dr. Christodoulos Hadjichristodoulou, revealed information which is extracted from the study of the portable icons that are kept mainly in the Icon - Sacristy of the Chapel of Agios Georgios.
At the beginning of the Conference, the President of the Culture Committee of the Municipality of Sotira, Mrs. Florentia Savva, the Mayor of Sotira, Mr. George Takkas, the Elder George Ioannou, the Archimandrite Augustinos Kouras and Mr. Mr.
During the conference, the work "Churches of the Savior, I Learn Playing" was presented by the Technical School of Paralimni and the Lyceum of Kokkinochorion Fotis Pitta. The presentation was made by the students and the responsible teachers, Angelos Smagas and Tryfonas Papagiannis.
The outdoor area of the Municipal Theater hosted a photo exhibition of the icons and murals of the churches of the Savior, as well as the works of the students of the Technical School of Paralimni. The exhibition will remain open until June 6 (Monday-Friday, 08: 00-14: 00).
The artistic program was presented by the Municipal Choir of Sotiras with Hymns and Traditional Songs Conducted by Loukas Zymaras as well as the Workshop of Traditional Dances of the Sotiras Catechism with Traditional Dances of Asia Minor and Conducted by Emili Zeniou.
Of particular interest was the presence of three of the six members of the four-part Ecclesiastical Choir of St. Petersburg, Russia, who sang church hymns in Russian.
After the end of the conference followed a tour of the monuments of the Savior.
The coordinator of the Conference was the Cultural Officer of the Municipality of Sotiras, Historian, Konstantinos Petrou.
The artistic program was curated by the President of the Culture Committee of the Municipality of Sotira, Florence Savva, while the conference was curated by the Culture Officers of the Municipality, Konstantinos Petrou and Marinos Pavlikkas.
