Floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in western Japan have killed at least 179 people, according to a new report released by government spokesman Yoshihide Suga today.

Many more residents of the affected areas are missing.

This is the deadliest disaster due to extreme weather in the Japanese archipelago since 1982.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to visit the affected areas later Wednesday.
