The death toll from the unprecedented rainfall in Japan has risen to 62.

At the same time, the number of missing people is increasing, who have reached 44, as broadcast by the National Broadcasting Network NHK, among them a nine-year-old girl.

Floods have forced millions to flee their homes, and in some parts of western Japan, the water level is three times higher than normal.

Extreme weather conditions caused landslides and flooding of rivers, leaving many people trapped in their homes.

A spokesman for the Japan Meteorological Agency said:

"We have never seen such rain. "The situation is extremely dangerous."

The Japanese government has set up an emergency management center in the prime minister's office and some 54.000 army, police and firefighters have been dispatched to areas in southwestern and western Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said:

"The fate of many people is still being ignored and others need help, we are racing against time."
