As it became known, Turkey rented the port of Khums located on the Mediterranean coast of Libya for 99 years, with the aim of creating a military base.

With the military base to be established at the port and granted to the Turkish armed forces, it is planned to strengthen Turkey's sovereignty in the Eastern Mediterranean, increase control over Turkish territorial waters and ensure the safety of merchant ships.
