Written Statement by the Minister of Interior Mr. Nikos Nouris on the vote against the proposal for a pan-Cypriot referendum on the reform of Local Government:

Yesterday's vote against the Government's proposal to hold a Pancyprian referendum is a tangible proof of the way in which the majority of the parties weigh the party benefits against the real interests of the citizens.

Those who declared themselves staunch supporters of the reform were exposed. At the crucial moment of the decision, the party sensors worked, the local votes were counted, the interpersonal relations were weighed and the prospect of another important reform was thrown in the basket, provocatively ignoring the risks of losing tens of millions from the European Fund.

Citizens now know what to expect from those who systematically deny the country progress and modernization.

A prescribed new postponement, under the pretext of the upcoming elections in the Local Government. And immediately after the final referral of the Bills to the Greek calendars due to presidential elections.

"Quality services at the lowest cost to the citizen" we are very afraid that they will remain an auspicious slogan.
