The Plenary Session of the Parliament approved a law which upgrades the protection status of the Passer domesticus ostrich (Passer domesticus) to a protected species on the recommendation of the European Commission. 38 MPs voted in favor, while there were 4 abstentions.
The Chairman of the Environment Committee, Chairman of the Movement of Ecologists Charalambos Theopemptou, stated that the enactment of the legislation also includes ostriches in the protected species of wild birds.
He added that they are aware of the problems of growers, but the Government undertook to help them with this issue.
He also mentioned that there is a huge problem in Cyprus with protected bird species and reminded the attack on an activist for the protection of vine birds. He spoke of the need to correct these mistakes.
