The Attorney General of the Republic, Costas Clerides, rejects a publication which claims that months ago he did not tell the truth in Parliament in relation to his involvement in the case of the transfer of the convicted Panagiotis Neokleous to the EOKA militants.

According to the newspaper Politis, the Attorney General, while assuring the Parliament that he was not involved and abstained from the relevant case, Ms. Loizidou's emails prove as mentioned in the article that he was not only constantly informed about the whole case but also guided and participated in the drafting.
In a statement, Costas Clerides points out that "Eventually, albeit slowly and gradually, the newspaper reveals its real motives and interest when dealing with the Attorney General. Motivation and interest, he adds, that have nothing to do with the public interest.
Reiterating that he was not involved in the case of the transfer of the convicted Panagiotis Neokleous to the militant group in Palodia, the Attorney General clarified that the official Eleni Loizidou, who undertook to address the issue, prepared the relevant legal opinions on her own without any legal advice. He considered it appropriate, Mr. Clerides continued, to contact the Audit Office, which was already dealing with the matter ex officio, and to notify the Attorney General of the opinions for information and approval. He stressed that no opinion of an official of the Legal Service may be sent to the recipient without the information, knowledge and approval of the Attorney General. Costas Clerides added that in this case, he was informed without intervening and did not intend to differentiate anything, except the insertion of the correct date of assignment for class purposes.
Concluding, the Attorney General wonders what the rebuke is for?
