Half a billion works in Famagusta for the next four years

The Mayors of Ayia Napa, Giannis Karousos, Paralimni, Theodoros Pyrillis and Sotiras, George Takkas, expressed their satisfaction with the progress of projects that have been announced for the Province of Famagusta.

"After the announcements of the President of the Republic, we had to express our gratitude for the fact that after decades of claims, this Government closed the issue of transferring services to the province of Famagusta where they rightfully belong," said Mr. Karousos.

"The Land Registry, the Town Planning and the District Administration will now have their base in the Province of Famagusta", he said.

According to him, "the importance for us is huge both from a practical point of view and from a symbolic point of view, since the suffering of the citizens of the Province of Famagusta stops but the provincial status and equal treatment in the Province of Famagusta returns".

"In combination with the temporary designation of Paralimni and Ayia Napa as an urban center, it will be the best for the Province of Famagusta and for its development".

All three Mayors referred to various projects that are planned or underway in their Municipalities.

The Ayia Napa Marina was said to be a 250m-euro project with 850 jobs during construction. According to Mr. Karousos, the contracts are signed with the contractor who will build the ports at the end of June and the foundation stone will be laid in a few weeks.

The Ayia Napa coastal front with a budget of 6,5 million euros is at the stage of announcing bids by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing. The restoration of the Ayia Napa Monastery with a budget of 1,5 million euros, is expected to be announced in three months.

Mr. Caruso He mentioned, among other things, the restoration of the Cape Greco landfill with a budget of 2,5 million euros. "A problem we have had for decades, which has been completely remedied," he said, adding that "a few days ago, about 26.000 trees were planted."

He went on to say that the artificial reef of Ayia Napa, which was the only reef in Cyprus without sinking a ship after movements, was donated to the ship Kyrenia of the navy that has been decommissioned and has been sunk for this purpose.

He also referred to the regeneration of the Liopetri river, saying that the goal is for the first phase worth 3,5 million euros to start in the coming months.

From his side, Theodoros Pyrillis for all the projects after yesterday's announcements "we are probably talking about the next three or four years for projects of the order of half a billion euros".

"These are projects that we have achieved after a harmonious and flawless cooperation all together, all the Municipalities and Communities of the free Province of Famagusta", he noted.

He referred to the Paralimni Marina, saying that it is a project that will be done with self-financing by foreign investors. The offer to PMV Maritime Holdings Ltd was awarded yesterday and it will be a project of 110 million euros, he added.
He also recalled the announcement of the Minister of Agriculture for a tender in the next two months for the Kokkinokremmos water project, saying that the project will solve the water supply problems of the whole province and possibly future service of the city of Famagusta if it returns with our good. We will gain self-sufficiency of our water needs for 48 hours while today we have self-sufficiency only two hours.

Regarding the urban development project in the Perneras area that has started three months ago, he said that the works during the tourist season are done far from tourism.

Thus, from a loan of 450.000 in 2011 in 2015, only 70.000 euros remained, while the Municipality has around 550.000 euros in its coffers, he added.

Indicatively, he mentioned that the income from the beach of Agia Thekla in 2011 was € 24.000 and in 2015 the total income (rents, umbrellas, beds, civil weddings, etc.) amounted to almost € 200.000.

Mr. Takkas also referred to the Municipal Stadium Sotira, which will cost 1 million 100 thousand, which will be funded by the Government. We expect his work to begin next month, he said.

He also spoke about the construction project of a road in the area "Vrasta" worth 700.000 euros, extension of the Acropolis Street south of the 2nd Municipal Savior, worth 600.000 euros and land concession for the new municipal cemetery of the Savior.
