The alarm bell is rung by the MP of Famagusta province of AKEL, Christakis Tziovanis regarding the issue of understaffing of the General Hospital of Famagusta.

According to a letter from Mr. Tziovanis, the Famagusta General Hospital is on the ventilator without the authorities worrying, bringing back the much-discussed issue of understaffing of the hospital, an issue for which an on-site meeting was held by the Minister of Health, Mr. George Yodos last Monday 23 January.

Mr. Tziovanis warns that the situation is out of control, while emphasizing that the medical, nursing and paramedical staff of the hospital make superhuman efforts to maintain the proper functioning of the institution.

He also notes that the indifference of those in charge has made the province of Famagusta miserable and impoverished. A province, which as he mentions, is identified with seasonality and lack of infrastructure.

He reminded, at the same time, that the parliamentary group of AKEL had registered the issue of the understaffing of the General Staff. Famagusta since 2015, to the competent Parliamentary Committee on Health, with the corresponding assurance from the competent Ministries of Health and Finance, which 2 years later remained unrealized.

He points out, finally, that the GESS is the only memorandum measure that the Anastasiadis-DISY Government "managed" not to implement, blaming the Government and the Minister of Health, for a burning issue that, as he states, burns the lives of citizens without managers to be concerned.

The letter of Mr. Christakis Tziovanis in detail:

"For the umpteenth time as AKEL we bring back the much-praised issue of understaffing of the General Hospital of Famagusta. We repeatedly sound the alarm.

Unfortunately, this time not at five but at five, since, as we are informed by the hospital staff, the situation is unstable. The understaffing of the hospital is a major issue for which we have been fighting relentlessly for years but, unfortunately, our cries are addressed to the ears of the deaf.

In a province that is suffering, in a province that is identified with seasonality, the lack of infrastructure but also the lack of vision by those in charge has made the province miserable and impoverished.

One would expect, listening to the commitments and wishes of the rulers for 4 years, that they would create a welfare state and offer the maximum in the field of Health and beyond.

Instead, we find every day that in a false development, in the vicious circle of the system, this government with its policies increases the contradictions of the economic and social strata.

And while the world is in dire need of state support, we are witnessing daily mismanagement by those in charge, we are witnessing the faceless state.

Human life has taken a back seat, no matter how sad it sounds. The lives of the people of Famagusta are trapped in the inadequacy and indifference of the state.

We recognize the superhuman and tireless efforts of the hospital's medical and paramedical staff, however we can not ignore the fact that understaffing and the consequent overtime and stress of the profession increase the chances of mistakes, which can cost human lives. The main good that is health, is now a kind of luxury.

In 2015, as a parliamentary group of AKEL, we had registered in the competent Parliamentary Committee on Health the issue of understaffing of Famagusta Hospital. At that time, the competent Ministries of Health and Finance assured us, that is, they "committed" themselves for immediate staffing, promotion and solution of any problems.

Today we have reached to stand on a moving sand, to sink without a lifeline.

The G.N. Famagusta is on the ventilator, without worrying. It is a burning issue, which burns the lives of the citizens without those in charge worrying in the slightest.

The security lines have now been exceeded. It must be immediately made clear to those in charge that understaffing deprives citizens of their basic right to public health. Human dignity lags behind, Minister.

The GESS is the only memorandum measure that the Anastasiadis-DISY government "managed" not to implement. Her enormous responsibilities for the situation that has been created cannot be overcome with the shouts and outbursts of anger of the Minister of Health.

At last, in this country, the rulers must, once and for all, treat the people with seriousness and respect. It is imperative in the field of Health to be procured and not to be procured.

We will be on alert, because human lives are not a game.
