Life imprisonment is the sentence imposed on Roula Pispirigou for attempted murder and the murder of her daughter Georgina. The decision is unanimous.

A little earlier, the Mixed Jury Court of Athens announced her unanimous guilt, after a marathon hearing that lasted about 16 months. The court also found her guilty of the crime of attempted homicide against the child on April 11, 2021.

In particular, with its decision, the court accepted the "catapult" proposal made to the audience on January 25 by the district attorney Evangelia Spyridonidou, asking for the accused mother's guilt for both of these felonies.

It is recalled that according to the accusation of attempted murder, the 35-year-old mother from Patras attempted to take the life of her newborn daughter the first time at the Karamandane Hospital of Patras, as a result of which the child became a quadriplegic.

Then, based on the indictment accepted by the court, the defendant took the life of her child at the "Panagiotis and Aglaia Kyriakou" Children's Hospital by administering a large dose of ketamine.

The court unanimously rejected the defendant's pending requests (eg presentation of the Children's ICU resuscitation bag, further genetic testing).

In the meantime, the prosecutor had requested that Pispirigou be sentenced to life imprisonment. Among other things, in her proposal to the court, the prosecutor stated: "In order for the decision to be considered a conviction, a penalty must be imposed as prescribed by law. Based on the jurisprudence, only life imprisonment is provided for. There is no other choice."

Kougias: I was surprised by the decision, we will not ask for mitigation

The lawyer of the accused, Alexis Kougias, announced that he will not ask for mitigation for his client.

"I was surprised by the decision, it is a huge judicial scandal and a big miscarriage of justice. I did not expect such a decision, however we must support justice... I am convinced of her innocence and I am sure that we will be vindicated in the second degree... We did not submit a request for mitigation, deciding together with the accused not to accept any punishment... We continue the our fight for the other court" said Mr. Kougias, among other things.

Roula Pispirigou listened without reacting to the decision on her guilt.
