Saad al-Hariri, who announced his resignation as Lebanese prime minister from Saudi Arabia on November 4th, will visit Egypt on Monday, said a leader of the Hariri Movement for the Future party.

Hariri has been in Paris since yesterday, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron, and has said he will return to Lebanon by Wednesday to attend celebrations marking his country's independence.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has said he will not accept Hariri's resignation until he is personally served, and all sides in Beirut have demanded his return as soon as possible.

His resignation sparked a political crisis in Lebanon and brought to the forefront a power struggle in the region between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In his resignation statement, Hariri criticized Iran and its ally, Hezbollah, an armed movement affiliated with the Lebanese government, and said he feared he would be assassinated.

Apart from a short trip to Abu Dhabi, he remained in Saudi Arabia until his transfer to France. His stay there led Lebanese officials and politicians to accuse Saudi Arabia of forcing him to step down, a charge he and Riyadh have denied.

On Friday, Hariri wrote on Twitter that his presence there was for "consultations on the future of the situation in Lebanon and its relations with the Arab region around it."

The Arab League's foreign ministers are meeting in Cairo today at the request of Saudi Arabia to discuss ways to address the role of Iran and Hezbollah in the region.
