The spokesman of the Police Headquarters Andreas Angelidis characterized as important the arrest of the 23-year-old who is said to be a member of a ring in the occupied areas, who passed in the free areas through an unguarded point of the ceasefire line and then violated houses and premises and stole.

In a statement after the meeting held under the Minister of Justice Ionas Nikolaou, at the Nicosia Police Department, Mr. Angelidis stated that the Police is steadily investigating the cases of burglary and theft, after the arrest of a 23-year-old in the Dali area.

Mr. Angelidis stated that the 23-year-old appeared before the Court and his 8-day detention was ensured, adding that based on the confession of the arrested person, he is involved in 6 cases of burglary and theft of property in Dali and the wider area.

The Police Spokesperson said that lately the Police have been concerned about the presence of persons who raised suspicions in the area and that is why the patrols had increased, intensified patrols were carried out and information was collected and evaluated.

Mr. Angelidis continued by stating that it is estimated that the arrest of the 23-year-old will lead to the clarification of other cases and thefts in the area, adding that all precautionary measures are taken based on the specifics that exist in the area.

Asked if it is true that the 23-year-old is said to be a member of a Turkish Cypriot ring, whose members seem to have crossed the line of fire and guarded kiosks and other businesses in the Idali area, and that three other people escaped during the arrest of the 23-year-old Mr. Angelidis said that an incident was recorded after the arrest of the specific person for this and the investigators are evaluating all the data and information.

Mr. Angelidis further stressed that information from citizens is essential for this and any citizen has any information about these cases in order to identify any other people involved in cases of burglary of homes and shops in the area.

According to the relevant announcement of the Police, the 23-year-old was located by the MMAD Poaching Squad, during a motorized patrol, around 2.20 in the early hours of Tuesday, in an area of the Municipality of Idali that is adjacent to the counter-line.

Specifically, a car with lights off was detected, coming from the occupied areas to enter the areas controlled by the Republic, with the lights off and heading to Dali. At some point on the road, a person stopped and got off. The members of MMAD moved towards the pedestrian, who as soon as he realized the presence of the police, fled. He was chased by police and before being arrested, he threw a loaded pistol and a mobile phone on the ground.

From the examinations carried out, it was established that he is a 23-year-old resident of occupied Famagusta.
