On July 16, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet.

The meeting will take place in the Finnish capital, Helsinki, and according to a statement from the White House and the Kremlin, the main topics of discussion between the two leaders will be relations between the two countries and national security issues.

 

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the meeting between the two leaders, saying:

"Dialogue is a sign of strength. "We do not want a new Cold War, we do not want to isolate Russia, we want to fight for a better relationship."

The US President will attend the NATO Summit in Belgium, later visit the British Prime Minister Theresa May and finally end up in Helsinki to meet with the Russian President.

What will they discuss

According to White House and Kremlin statements, the two leaders will discuss US-Russian relations, as well as various national security issues.

However, Donald Trump said he wanted to discuss the war in Syria and the situation in Ukraine. He went on to say that:

"I think we will discuss many different issues and we will see what happens. I believe that very good things will come out after the meetings ".

Putin and Trump have met twice more at summits. Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, said in a meeting with Putin on Tuesday:

"Both President Trump and President Putin feel that it is important for the two leaders of these two countries to meet and discuss their mutual problems and areas of cooperation. "It's something I think both of them know will help improve US-Russian bilateral relations and stability around the world."
